HILES NEWS
By: Margaret McCarthy

Happy June! June has arrived, and it seems like we are jumping right into summer-although we did get a touch of frost this weekend. Memorial Day was beautiful this year, but a little strange with no Memorial Day Celebration in Hiles this year. If you’d like to help me plan one for next year, reach out! Crandon’s Memorial Day Celebration was a very powerful event this year-but then again, it always is! This year, though, a new memorial to WWII was unveiled. If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, make sure you do soon. Many hands go into making sure that the success of these events/memorials, and to make sure that once something is implemented, to make sure that going forward, everything runs smoothly and well-taken care of. Many played a huge role in this, but especially Jill (Votis) and Jeff Krueger, along with Tami (Votis) Stroik, played an integral role in updating and maintaining the Crandon’s Veteran’s Memorial. They get others involved as needed, and the result is a wonderful Memorial that shows the respect and honor to All Veterans! As Hiles continues planning a new Veteran’s Memorial that will be located by the Hiles Mill Pond, we can only hope that we can show Veterans the same honor and respect. And for an update on the Hiles Veteran’s Memorial, new flagpoles and flags have been ordered and the process is getting off to a good start. Information on ordering memory plaques to honor your favorite Veteran will be available soon as well. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to be involved with the group planning the new memorial. The more hands that join the ones we have already will only make it even better.

Several events are coming up in Hiles, so make sure to add them to your calendar. The first one coming up is the annual Hiles Fire Department Trapshoot. This will be held Saturday, July 19th. Final location to be determined as we get closer to the date. Tickets are available at local businesses or from fire department members. This year, the drawing will be for a Winchester SX4 Upland Field 12 Gauge-currently it can be seen at the Hiles Trailhead Pub.

The next event will be the Great Northwoods Music Festival that will be held Friday, July 25th and Saturday July 26th at the Hiles Trailead Pub. Proceeds will go to support seven local organizations, including both the Hiles and Argonne Fire Department along with snowmobile and atv groups. This is a new event for our area that will be a lot of fun and will benefit many.

The third event will be the Third Annual Fire Department Picnic held on Saturday, August 23rd at the Mill Pond. Food and fun are on the agenda for this Saturday!

A good reminder for everyone is that Fire Danger for our area is still High. We could definitely use rain, but hopefully no major storms as clean-up still continues from the ice storm. Be aware of conditions before burning, even campfires with as dry as we’ve been. And if you’re wondering what the restrictions are, you can go to dnr.wi.gov for more information.

Have a great week and enjoy June! Keep in your prayers those in our community who are sick, especially Ray Nery and Lee Tauer and their families.
